Social Media – getting it right.

The one thing I try and stress to my clients is the Social Media is a long-term strategy – not because the impact takes time (though it can), but (more so) because that it takes time to do.

To be considered successful in the Social Media space you need one thing – a voice. It doesn’t have to be very loud; it just has to be there.

Right now Social Media is the ‘cool kid’ of online marketing techniques – it’s new, it’s edgy and it’s slightly unknown.  But don’t discount the benefits it can have on your business due to it’s newness, because if done right Social Media Marketing can be one of the most effective methods of marketing your business can invest in.

With so many options out there, and the constant evolving of the platforms it can be hard to know where to start. Before you begin, you should think about:

  1. What want to achieve with social media. Clear objectives are essential for you to map out your strategy.
  2. Who are you talking to? This will help you identify which platforms you should utalise.
  3. How much time can you reasonably spend on your Social Media (will it be daily or weekly or even monthly?). Because there is no point setting up your platforms for you to do one post and leave it.

Once you know the above you can plan out a marketing calendar for each of the platforms you wish to use and what you want to say (and why you are an authority on saying it).

One thing to remember about Social Media – is that it’s social. It’s not just a newswire for your PR releases or your blog (though they do make great posts) its for you to ask questions, post photos, make statements as well as the more corporate articles and posts about your business and products (which do of course have a place on these platforms).

So remember, with Social Media Marketing its best to:

  • Stick to your goals
  • Good content is better than lots of content
  • Be true to your brand
  • Commit to it
  • Mix it up
